West Ham won 3–2, with goals from John Sissons, Geoff Hurst and Ronnie Boyce. Doug Holden and Alex Dawson scored Preston's goals. The FA Cup Final
Wembley Stadium
Saturday 3rd May
West Ham United won only 13 of their 42 League matches during the 1974-75 season, while Fulham averaged exactly a point a match in the Second Division. Yet, such is the fickleness of Cup fortune that, against all the odds, two moderate sides fought their way through to the 1975 FA Cup Final.
The Hammers had won the Cup once, 11 years earlier in a 3-2 thriller against Preston.
Fulham were appearing in their first Final and they had featured in an amazing 11 Cup matches en route to Wembley. They had needed three games to see off Hull City in the Third Round and four to get past Nottingham Forest in Round 4.
The 1975 Final was one abounding in personalities. Alec Stock and Ron Greenwood had already tasted Wembley success as managers - and Fulham could boast two former England captains in Bobby Moore and Alan Mullery.
Fulham looked to be the better side in an indifferent first half, with the ball rarely in either penalty area except when defenders passed nervously back to the goalkeepers.
Centre-half John Lacy went close with powerful headers from Jimmy Conway’s corner kick and Mullery’s free kick. At the other end Trevor Brooking’s volley from at least 30 yards soared high over the bar.
West Ham slowly but surely increased the pressure after the interval, making the breakthrough on the hour. Peter Mellor parried Bill Jennings’ awkwardly swerving shot and the rebound was gratefully slammed home from six yards by Alan Taylor, who had only joined “Hammers” six months earlier from Fourth Division Rochdale.
The Eastenders scored an almost identical goal just four minutes later. Mellor failed to make a clean catch from Graham Paddon’s hard shot and Taylor, the “Rochdale Whippet”, again put the ball in. In a very sporting Final, intelligently refereed by Pat Partridge, neither trainer had set foot on the pitch.

Cruyff signed image |
Signed photo of the legendry dutch footballer. Hendrik Johannes Cruyff, born in Amsterdam 1947, began his career at local club Ajax in 1964 where he blossomed into a star. His excellent skills on the ball, pace and ability made him an asset to the Ajax-team that would later rule Europe.
In his trademark jersey 14 Cruyff lifted Ajax as high as they had ever been. Six Dutch league championships, four domestic cup titles and then three straight European Cup triumphs 1971-73 plus a European Super Cup and World Club Cup title on top of that as well. Johan Hendrik Johannes Cruyff, born in Amsterdam 1947, began his career at local club Ajax in 1964 where he quickly blossomed into a star. His excellent skills on the ball, great pace and ability to lift his team-mates to a higher level, made him an invaluable asset to the Ajax-team that would later conquer Europe. He left Ajax early in the 1973/74 season for Barcelona after 318 matches and 250 goals when his team-mates elected Piet Keizer as captain instead of himself. It disappointed Johan. "Barca" could offer a better salary as well and that of course helped luring him to the Catalan capital. Cruyff’s immediate presence in the team helped Barcelona win a Spanish league championship that same season - their first in 14 years.
In the summer of 1974, the Holland team with Cruyff as the captain impressed everybody in the World Cup in West Germany. Their "Total-Football" style where every player moved position all the time and somehow made the Dutch outnumber their opponents in every area of the field and marched towards the Final in Munich in great style.
The hosts were opponents in the Final and they hadn't even touched the ball when Cruyff was brought down in the penalty area in the first minute. Neeskens, put Holland in front from the spot. The Germans would however come back and win 2-1.
Cruyff would never play in another World Cup again. He took part in the qualifiers for Argentina '78, but retired shortly before the finals.
However, already in 1979 Cruyff was back out on the field again, this time in the North American Soccer League where many other fading stars had gathered. He turned out for LA Aztecs and Washington Diplomats over three seasons before returning to Europe, first a very short spell at Levante in Spain, then to his native Ajax in 1981. He won two more Dutch league championships there and another domestic cup title before ending his glorious career with rivals Feyenoord in 1984. There he won another league and cup double as a 37-year old with youngsters like Ruud Gullit as team-mates.
Johan Cruyff then retired after 752 official career appearances and 425 goals. He was European Footballer of the Year (Golden Ball) winner three times and has since also been a highly successful coach at both Ajax and Barcelona. |

England Rugby 2003 multi autographed image signed by 20 including Wilkinson and Johnson |
An amazing England Rugby 2003 multi autographed by 20 of the Squad signed by
Stuart Abbott
The Wasps centre could surely not have dreamed of this honour, a little more than four months after his England debut.
The 25-year-old has already made an impact with two tries for the national team, and looks set to be a fixture for some time to come however injury shortened his promising career.
Iain Balshaw
The pacy Bath back saw his World Cup chances limited, although he did make it on to the field in injury-time in the final.
Kyran Bracken
Ultimately lost out to Matt Dawson in the race for the scrum-half position, but Bracken still made some telling contributions. Perhaps most crucially, he forced a turnover just before half-time in the crucial pool game with South Africa, preventing a Springbok score which would have given them a half-time lead.
Ben Cohen
The Northampton player did not produce his very best form in Australia - but was regarded as one of the best wings in the international game. Cohen's strength makes him a formidable opponent, and with his World Cup winners' medal he emulated his uncle George, who was part of the England football side which won the World Cup in 1966.
Matt Dawson
Cemented his position as England's first-choice scrum-half during the World Cup, at the expense of Kyran Bracken. His break at the end of extra time in the final, which helped set up Jonny Wilkinson for his drop goal winner, is already part of the most famous bit of footage in English rugby history.
Andy Gomarsall
The scrum-half was behind Kyran Bracken and Matt Dawson in the running for a first-team spot, but he did play in the demolition of Uruguay.
Will Greenwood
The Harlequins centre was one of the most potent finishers in the game, with many international tries to his name. Returned home during the World Cup due to problems with his wife's pregnancy but returned for England's hour of glory.
Martin Johnson
Regarded by many as the finest leader in the game, Johnson's importance in England's victory is beyond question. His towering, brooding presence always casts a huge shadow over England's opposition. He went on to manage the England team.
Ben Kay
The quiet Liverpudlian is not always the man who catches the eye - but with his tireless driving, he makes a big contribution to the team. His knock-on in the World Cup final with the try-line beckoning was a low point, but Kay did not let the pressure get to him.
Josh Lewsey
The former Army officer produces plenty of dynamic runs and is a good finisher who has already notched up 13 international tries - five in the Uruguay match in the World Cup. At home on the wing or at full-back.
Dan Luger
Luger was, infamously, England's '16th man' against Samoa, inadvertently running on to the pitch at the end of the match before being ushered off. He would not want to be remembered for that and his try-scoring prowess - he already had at the time of the world cup 24 Test tries to his name - that ensured that the Perpignan winger was known for other reasons.
Lewis Moody
The tall, athletic Leicester Tiger at the time of the world cup quite ready to replace Neil Back in the back row, but at the time just 25 was be hopeful of many opportunities to come. The openside flanker will always remember the climax of the World Cup final, replacing Richard Hill in the dying moments.
Simon Shaw
By Clive Woodward's own admission, the giant Wasps lock was unlucky not to make England's original 30-man World Cup squad - but he still made the trip after Danny Grewcock broke his hand. The 30-year-old ultimately did not feature Down Under but since then has had a good career and recently toured with the British Lions
Steve Thompson
Hooker Thompson is not a man who easily gives way to anyone - and his muscle was vital as England tried to counter the physical threat of Australia. His line-out throwing at the World Cup was erratic, but his all-round game was as solid as anyone in the team.
Mike Tindall
The burly Yorkshireman got the nod over Mike Catt in the final and did his job well. The Bath centre was widely respected,
Phil Vickery The Gloucester prop, with his 50-inch chest, 19-stone bulk and oriental tattoo - which translates as 'I'll fight you to the death' - is an intimidating opponent for anyone. Vickery captained England and took over when Martin Johnson stepped down.
Dorian West
Leicester hooker West has the unwanted distinction of being the only person to captain England in defeat during 2003, skippering the second-string XV in their defeat in France in August. He did make amends for that, however, playing as a replacement in the 24-7 semi-final win over France.
Julian White
The Leicester tighthead played in England's fraught pool match against Samoa, but subsequently suffered from knee trouble.
Jonny Wilkinson
Pretty much every superlative in the dictionary has been applied to England's match-winning fly-half superstar in 2003. Already an MBE, Wilkinson's OBE adds to the World Cup winners' medal and BBC Sports Personality of the Year trophy which he already has in his rapidly-filling trophy cabinet. A rare autograph to obtain.
Joe Worsley
The Wasps number eight blotted his World Cup copybook somewhat with his arrogant applause gesture after being sin-binned in the pool game against Uruguay. But was an explosive runner who had the class to flourish on the international scene and the sort of player who stepped in for Richard Hill or Lawrence Dallaglio to emphasise England's strength in depth.

Frankie Detorri signed large photo |
Frankie Detorri 20X16 mounted photo of Frankie dismounting after his 7 wins at Ascot on 28 September 1996 signed in Black pen.
Born as Lanfranco, on December 15th, 1970, in Italy, Frankie had a head-start as his father, Gianfranco, was a top Italian jockey who had won the 2,000 Guineas in 1975 & 1976.
Although he started his apprenticeship in Newmarket in 1985 with Luca Cumani, he rode 17 winners in the winter season of 1986/87 in Italy.
His first UK winner was aboard Lizzy Hare at Goodwood on June 9th, 1987 although his first ever winner was on Rif at Turin on November 16th, 1986.
At the age of 19, Cumani appointed him as stable jockey to replace Ray Cochrane after Frankie had become Champion Apprentice in 1989.
In 1990, he rode 100 winners in a season (the first teenager to do so since Lester Piggott) and won his first Group 1 with a wonderful ride on Markofdistinction in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.
1991 saw a slight drop in winners at 94 but he did win his first Derby, the German one, on Temporal. 1992 provided his second century and he rode outsider Polytain to win the French Derby.
Up to the better part of 1992, Frankie had always ridden in a low crouched style but with his feet well in the irons.
Towards the end of 1992, Frankie started changing his style to the toe-in-the-iron, ankle-breaking, calf-tearing, stirrups-twisted like a rubber band, low tuck, rein-shortening, rythmical style he now uses to such great effect.
He is one of few jockeys whose hands on the reins rest below the height of the horse's mouth. This, along with the play on his ankles allow him to take the pressure of the horse's mouth and relax his mounts to great effect.
The first race on the card at the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita in 1993. His mount started slightly sluggishly from an inside draw.
But Frankie, leathers even shorter than usual, rousted his mount to share the lead. Into the straight, nobody looked more American than LD and we all wanted him to win but however his mount tired and we knew we would have to wait for another day
Probably the best track he rides would be Longchamp where he often leads from the front. He is definitely the jockey to have in a tight finish or for horses that need holding up. They seem to explode in the final furlong with him on board.
People now love his flying dismounts, not always in Group 1s, as his "thank you" to the fans.
Frankie's Magnificent 7 at Ascot on 28 September 1996 was an amazing feat.
His concentration was an example to sportsmen & women in any field.
The seven winners were: Wall Street (Cumberland Lodge Stakes), Diffident (Diadem Stakes), Decorated Hero (Tote Festival Handicap), Mark of Esteem (Q.E.II Stakes), Fatefully (Rosemary Rated Stakes), Lochangel (Blue Seal Conditions Stakes) and Fujiyama Crest (Gordon Carter Handicap).
His other feats have been becoming Champion Jockey in 1994, 1995 and 2004, being in his 13th year as stable jockey for Godolphin and winning 9 Classics in the UK.
He has also ridden 138 Group 1 winners (to Scorpion's St.Leger). He rode his 100th Group 1 on Kazzia in the 1,000 Guineas. He so nearly had made it the century on Sakhee in the B.C.Classic when just being sniffed out by Tiznow in 2001.
The Derby is still missing in his trophy cabinet and perhaps he may be going down the Gordon Richards path here. Frankie is also known as one of the captains on BBC’s Question of Sport, he now is in partnership with Mark Pierre White in a restaurant business.
